The Texas 4-H Livestock Mentor Program's Beef & Swine Training will be held November 7 -8, 2008, at the Gillespie County Extension Office in Fredericksburg. The program will begin on Friday, November 7 at 9:30 a.m. The program will conclude on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.
The purpose of the program is to train adult project leaders to provide support to new or inexperienced project families, thereby enhancing the livestock project experience for youth.
Experienced and highly knowledgeable volunteers are excellent candidates to serve as 4-H Livestock Mentors. The volunteers' level of knowledge and expertise can vary since they will primarily target the inexperienced 4-H livestock feeders. All recruited volunteers will benefit from the training and be better equipped to serve.
It is important to note that the format for this training will include general assemblies, focusing on youth development, in addition to concurrent sessions that are species-specific. A volunteer will only be able to participate in either the Beef or the Swine training, not both. Participants must complete the entire course. Volunteers will be asked to provide support to 4-H members and give leadership to learning opportunities for members, parents and volunteers to enhance the total 4-H livestock project experience.
Registration will take place via 4-H CONNECT. Registration costs for this event include meals, refreshments, educational resources, and other program expenses. Early registration will be $100 through October 24, 2008, and late registration will be $125 starting October 25th, 2008 through November 5, 2008. Registration will be available online beginning October 1, 2008. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you would like more information on this training event, please call the Smith County Extension office at 903-590-2980.
The above website should supply all the information you need to know for this year's fair, i.e., livestock shows, arts & crafts entries, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: This year's Academic Rodeo has varying dates for the events.
- The Fashion Show is Tuesday, November 18, 2008.
- If you plan to participate, we need to know by November 7th to submit our summary sheet.
- Worksheets for the Construction and Smart Buying Divisions must be turned in Tuesday, November 12, 2008. This is a firm deadline as it is set by the East Texas State Fair (not 4-H).
Also in the Academic Rodeo are SHOLARSHIPS for Middle School and High School age students. Be sure to check them out and start work on them early. (This is excellent practice for those larger scholarships down the road.)
See you at the fair!
